Espresso
Espresso is another term for short black. This is the most crucial part of an espresso-based drink because this is what brings the strong taste of coffee. They come in two types: Espresso and Double Espresso. The latter is also called Doppio because it contains two shots of espresso in a single serving. For coffee lovers, a Doppio just means double the shots, double the (caffeine) rush!
Macchiato
Short Macchiato is basically the same as espresso except that it comes with steamed, frothy milk poured on top of the dark-colored coffee. The milk serves to neutralize the harshness of the caffeine-rich espresso. Baristas globally follow different recipes of making short macchiato. They reinvent the conventionally espresso-and-milk-on-top approach with a three-tiered version which has a espresso base, a mixture of coffee and milk in the middle and milk on top. Its counterpart: Long Macchiato is similar to the first category. The prefix long just suggests two shots of espresso in a mug.
Ristretto
A Ristretto follows a different recipe for making its espresso shot. The coffee shots are made with the same quantity of coffee beans but half the amount of water. This makes Ristretto a much stronger espresso with a more coffee-heavy ratio.
Long Black of Americano
A serving of Long Black or Americano is a water-rich coffee which is made with two-thirds hot water with a single shot of espresso on top. This is a popular choice among locals who prefer pure coffee without milk.
Café Latte
Known more commonly as just Latte, this is a milder and sweetened alternative to the above types. Made with espresso shots, steamed milk with just a little foam on top, this type is more suited to taste buds that don’t like a strong taste of coffee in their drink.
Cappuccino
Much like a Latte, a Cappuccino has more milky foam and chocolate sprinkled on top. Mild in taste with a hint of chocolate, this type of coffee is a popular choice among beginners who are new to the coffee game.
Flat White
More commonly had in New Zealand and Australia, a Flat White is similar to a Cappuccino without the foam or chocolate that goes on top. Instead it’s just a mixture of coffee shots and steamed milk.
