“I love to travel but I don’t have enough money.” How many times have you heard this statement, or some version of it? We’re pretty sure it’s been a couple of times. Most people love traveling. In fact, 10–15 percent of Americans’ annual income goes towards traveling.
But if you’re a student, you probably don’t have an annual income, so what can you do to have enough money to travel to at least two or three places while in college?
Let’s look at some very easy steps you can take to enable you to start spamming your followers with aesthetic wanderlust pictures.
Get Cheap Housing
Living away from our parents and partying with friends is central to the college experience, but if you’re going to a college near home, don’t go for individual or campus housing. By staying at home, you save on rent, furniture, bills, and not to mention, on parties that you’ll be hosting if you have your own apartment.
For those studying out of city, opt out of on-campus boarding, as it’s usually expensive. Get a place near your university that’s cheaper and share it with other students.
Get a Job
College isn’t all about classes, exams, and assignments. Between all these, most of your free time is spent mindlessly. If you want to travel, you should motivate yourself to get a job that isn’t full-time, but allows you to make decent cash. Here are some easy job options for someone with a fluctuating schedule.
On-Campus
- Library Attendant
- Teaching Assistant
- Research Assistant
- Tutoring
- Cafeteria Barista
Off-Campus
- Babysitting
- House-sitting
- Waitressing/Busboy
- Valet Attendant
- Yard Work
- Helper/Mover
This is just a basic list. You can find many more by talking to the campus employment office.
Limit Your Expenses
Partying, eating out, shopping, and other costly activities are fun, but you need to prioritize. If you want to travel using your savings, your expenses should be minimal. Getting Starbucks in the morning or going out for drinking at night isn’t necessary, even on the weekends.
You also don’t need to buy expensive clothing or formal dresses that will only be used once or twice.
Take a Semester Abroad
Exchange and study abroad programs are one of the top ways to travel without compromising on your education. When applying for these programs, look for scholarships and financial aid, even if they cover only part of the expenses.
Choose an affordable location and plan your expenses—like accommodation, easting and local travel options—beforehand so you have an idea of how much and what you’ll be spending on.
Most of these tips will also work if you’ve just graduated and aren’t in any hurry to become a corporate slave, but want to travel for a little while. Life is short, so better enjoy it!
