That telltale strain you feel at the back of your eyes could only mean one thing: your eye prescription has changed, and it’s time to get a new pair of glasses.
But given that you just had them changed a year back, why has it changed again, and so fast? Furthermore, what do you do if it keeps on changing?
Here’s why your prescription is changing so quickly, and what you can do about it!
Here’s why Your Vision Keeps Changing
– You’re Getting Older
According to a podcast on changing vision from the Health University of Utah, people between the ages of 20–30 report changes in their vision most frequently.
Over time, this fluctuation abates, and the prescription becomes more stable. However, if you’re experiencing changes in your prescription and you’re over the age of 40, it’s most likely because of deterioration in the elasticity in your eye, astigmatism, a cataract, or some other eye condition. So it’s always best to have your eyes checked by a professional.
– You’re Tired
Bad vision can sometimes be temporary. For example, if you’ve been working at your computer for too long, or in a dry environment, your eyes will feel tired, or itchy. They might also become watery or dry.
In such cases, eye strain may cause blurry vision, which, in turn, makes you feel as though your prescription has changed. If that’s the case, take frequent breaks when using your computer, and place a humidifier by your side so there’s enough moisture in the air.
– You Might Have Diabetes
If you have a family history of diabetes, you might want to get yourself checked. In general, patients with higher blood sugar tend to be more shortsighted.
If their blood sugar level stabilizes, these patients become more farsighted. Get your HbA1c levels checked. If you have diabetes, ask your physician and eye doctor for the correct, finalized prescription.
– You Might Be Pregnant
Pregnancy brings about a lot of changes in the human body. One of those changes is a myopic shift whilst pregnant or while breastfeeding.
If you experience a change in your vision during these nine months, understand that these changes may be temporary, but it’s still a safer bet to get your glasses changed.
For some patients, their prescription does change permanently post-pregnancy.
